When we here at Black Excellist started this YouTube Channel, we felt that it was very important to highlight the rich heritage and history that is unique to African Americans and the Black Experience. We built this platform around a strategic effort of transforming the way that we as African Americans are portrayed in the media and social media alike. Thus, we set out on a mission to empower, educate, and enlighten the Black community while enhancing our image as architects of this country and its culture.

We are well aware that the number of large Black-owned websites and channels that cover our culture in a positive light are disappearing. Many of our Black-owned sites are either publishing less original content, selling to larger mainstream entities, or are shutting down entirely. But what is more often the case, our most popular websites are either celebrity-driven, gossip-driven, or just do not portray us as the kings and queens that we are.

In this video, we felt that it’s important that we highlight websites that are devoted to informing Black people of important issues, committed to portraying us in a manner in which we deserve, and dedicated to contributing to the rebranding of the African American community.

  1. Should have at least said '33 top African-American Websites'. This must just be this site's staff's top websites. What was the criteria – Black women and Hip-Hop fan interest? Such is the state of Black culture – such that it has been, since the late 20th century to now – very narcissistic and consumer conscious. As big a part of Black culture humor is, I would have thought 'The Root' would be on this list. I imagine Very Smart (and I might add narcissistic) Brothers, and Michael Harriot probably not happy about this slight, and Roland Martin must be tick-off about Tom Joyner making the list and not him. Maybe Martin needs to come up with another theme song that boast even more about his attributes. Black people are so contradictory and inconsistent. At one end of the spectrum we talk about being magical, kings & queens, and excellence, but on the other end we call, having self respect and valuing our lives, something called "practicing respectability politics", as if that is too much to ask of our people. Wakanda nonsense are we engaging in? Did we really leave our minds in Africa as Malcolm X suggested? Can we come together on at least a basic set of values, that we all agree to recognized and adhere to? If we can't, what use is there in thinking of ourselves as a homogeneous group of people?

  2. Too much celebrity entertainment. Also, when I hear the word Diverse.. I know it means more than just black culture, possibly others of inter-relations and sexual desires. 28 of these sites are useless and don't enhance people's overall well-being unless looking at fashion articles or being told how pretty you are is satisfying.

  3. You guys should REALLY include some of Dr. Boyce Watkins financial websites! They serve a WAY greater purpose for our people than many of these sites listed on this video!

  4. Thank you for this! What an awesome community. I must say, our Kong’s need more content aimed towards them too. Some of these primarily focus on us ladies. Oh and that black live matter site smh I highly suggest visiting the site because they are not for the black man. Please read into them people. Their focus goes to the single minority mothers (which basically includes all races when they say “minorities”) and LGBT community. BLK does not support the black family as a whole.

  5. We're to divided and busy trying to survive the brainwashing of our people. We're to spread out. Its sad but it's the agenda of the government who want to kill off 6 billion people. So much so they put it in stone

  6. Great video as always! This was extremely helpful as I didn’t know about many of these sites. I totally recommend watching the whole video as it’s very enlightening but for those that might not have the time, here is the list.
